Healthy breakfast: Acai Smoothie Bowls

The Acai Berry is a deep. Purple berry originating from the Amazon in Brazil. These berries grow on the açai palm trees found in the rainforest of middle and south America.

Because of its many health and wellness benefits this formerly unknown little berry has made a huge impact and is now one of the favorite so called ‘superfoods’. You are not considered a true ‘healthy’ and trendy food spot without at least 1 açai smoothie bowl on the menu.

Health benefits of the Acai berry

So, what are these mysteries super health benefits? They are actually quite impressive. The açai berry is – compared to other fruits – higher in fat and low in sugar and also contains healthy fiber. Fiber is essential in a healthy diet as it aides digestion and a gut health. Even more impressive is the long list of antioxidants found in the açai berry. As you might now blueberries are considered super healthy because of the high number of antioxidants. The açai berry however contains at least 3 times as much antioxidants compared to blueberries!

Frozen or powder?

Due to its popularity (frozen) açai berries are getting more widely available. Unfortunately, I have not found the best solution for buying açai berries here in The Netherlands. They are available online and will be delivered to your door frozen. But because I don’t make this smoothie bowl too often this is for me a bit too expensive and tedious. Luckily açai berry powder is for sale in a lot of stores and this powder still contains many of the health benefits so therefore I choose to use this.

Add your favorite toppings

In combination with – also very healthy – blueberries and brambles this makes one delicious power smoothie. After an intense workout this is all I am craving: one big bowl of delicious colourful goodness! Acai smoothie bowl with superfood topping: passionfruit, blue berries, cacao nibs & coconut flakes. This breakfast takes 2 minutes to make and is super nutritious with tons of good vitamins and minerals, trust me it’s sooooo good!

My new favorite breakfast during the summer! After an intense workout this is all I am craving: one big bowl of delicious colorful goodness! Equipment

Ingredients

Smoothie

  • 1 large banana
  • 100 gr frozen berries
  • 125 ml fresh orange or apple juice
  • 50 gr Alpro Soya Go On
  • 5 gr Acai Powder

Toppings:

  • 5 gr cacao nibs
  • 1 passionfruit
  • 10 gr blue berries
  • 5 gr coconut flakes

Instructions

  • Peel the banana and set a few slices for topping aside.
  • Add all the smoothie ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and deep purple
  • Pour the smoothie mixture into a bowl, decorate with the toppings et voila!

Notes

Side note: I was unable to find (frozen) acai berries, that is why I used powder/berries, if you do have acai berries substitute the berries for the acai berries and leave out the powder.
